Guide to buying gags

Sexy, beautiful gags… there are so many gags available now, it can be difficult to know which to buy. However, it turns out that many of them are not ideal, and sometimes made from cheap materials or as novelties rather than true BDSM gear. Below I have listed some good ones.
Hush Comfort Silicone Ballgag by Extreme Restraints
Hush Comfort Silicone Ballgag by Extreme Restraints ★★★★★ $$$$$
If you only own one gag, this should be the one. Most ball-gags have a fundamental flaw, which is that the leather strap connecting to the ball tend to rub and chafe on the wearer's lips and mouth - making them quite unpleasant to wear. What's different about this gag is the thin piece (approx 1.5" long) of silicone than connects the ball to the leather strap. This may seem like a detail, but it prevents the chafing. I have had several submissives for whom gags have been a limit in the past, but who are ok with wearing this gag. Also, it's lockable. The link is to the red one - available in black here.

Mini Spider Gag by Huse
Mini Spider Gag by Huse ★★★★ $$$$$
The problem with standard Ring Gags is that they can be fairly easily rotated by the wearer's tongue, such that they don't reliably serve the purpose of keeping the mouth open. Huse created the original "spider gag" - this product - back in the 90's. It fixed the problem with the addition of the metal prongs to the ring that prevent the ring from being rotated. If you have ever wondered where you can find the ring / spider gags used by Insex and Kink.com - this is the one. Take care putting into the sub's mouth so as not to damage teeth on the metal. Note - there are some imitations of this style available at various web sites, but be careful because they aren't the same and the ring is typically too small to do anything useful with.

Silicone Bit Gag by Stockroom
Silicone Bit Gag by Stockroom ★★★★ $$$$$
Bit gags offer a different aesthetic, and a different sensation, than ball-gags. Neither is particularly better than the other - they both achieve a similar outcome of gag-talk and drool. Sometimes you just like to try something different. Because of the nature of the design, this naturally gets around the chafing issue of most ball-gags, because is the soft bit which touches the mouth, not the strap.

Stainless Steel Jennings Gag by Extreme Restraints
Stainless Steel Jennings Gag by Extreme Restraints ★★★★ $$$$$
With "Jennings" gags, you put it into the mouth in a closed state, and then you can ratchet it open to the desired state and then it holds in place. Great if you want to put things in their mouth - toys, fingers, whatever. For that purpose, these really are better than ring gags. I have scoured the internet high and low - this is the only Jennings gag I have found with the black rubber coating which protects the teeth. You may find that even when fully open, it is possible to dislodge it. If that bothers you, then this version with straps may be what you need.

Inflatable gag

This one adds a new element of fun with the ability to inflate the gag once it is securely inside the mouth. Use this in your scene to create some unique sensations and a whole new kind of control over your partner.

Crimson Tied Breathable Ball Gag by XR
Crimson Tied Breathable Ball Gag ★★★★★ $$$$$
This gag has small holes in the ball, so that the wearer can more easily breath through their mouth. For some new submissives, this can go a long way to easing their nervousness about wearing a gag. For this reason, it's worth having one handy. I'm not a huge fan of this gag, but I'd rather a new play partner was ok with this one than none at all. Also, it's a very low price point which is nice.

Tips for gags:
  • In BDSM, gags have a functional purpose of preventing the wearer from speaking (not to be confused with preventing any noise, which they typically do not do). Aside from this though, they can also add dramatically to the dominant and submissive’s respective head-spaces. For many people, gags also add a beautiful aesthetic element which complements all forms of bondage.
  • Gags come in a range of sizes, generally from about 1.25 inches (small) to 2 inches in diameter. When buying, it’s best to err on the small side. A smaller gag will still achieve it’s main purpose, whereas a gag that’s too big will be very uncomfortable for the wearer and they probably won’t be able to wear it too long
  • With some effort, someone wearing a gag can normally still make vocal sounds (of a sort). This can be a fun part of a scene – making a submissive “gag-talk” in response to questions that you ask them (if you / they are into a little humiliation play 🙂
  • Most gags tend to cause a build up of drool in the mouth. You might get a lot coming out when you take it out, or in some cases coming out the mouth while being worn. Many people in BDSM find this extremely sexy. Newer submissives wearing a gag can become quite self-conscious of drooling though – so be sure to reassure them about how hot it is so it doesn’t ruin their headspace.
  • It can be dangerous to leave a person unattended while they are wearing a gag, especially if they are otherwise in bondage.
