The Violet Wand

Here at Kink Weekly we aim to spotlight different forms of BDSM play. Not only will this prevent boredom – which can happen no matter how adventurous you are – but this will also introduce (or re-intoduce) you to different forms of play you might have overlooked. In a previous article we examined electrical play using the TENS unit. In this week’s installment, we will spotlight another electrical toy that is my personal favorite – the Violet Wand.

Just like the Tens Unit, which was originally made for the world of physical therapy, the Violet Wand was originally designed for medical purposes. And like the Tens Unit, it has been adapted for BDSM play. The Violet Wand is basically a modified Tesla coil. (Named for its inventor, Nikolo Tesla, not the car!) A Tesla coil is a device that uses resonance to boost an electrical signal to many times its original amplitude. This results is a high voltage spark but one with very low amperage. Thus the actual risk of any electrical damage is minimal.

The Violet Wand uses these electrical sparks to create an incredible array of sensations.  When held near someone’s body, it sends out a continuous stream of tiny lightning bolts, giving off a distinct purple light. The intensity is adjustable.

Whereas the Tens Unit’s electrodes come in direct contact with the skin (although the bullet attachment can be inserted into the anus and vagina), the Violet Wand requires no physical touching. The electricity can be conducted through the body of the Dom/me. This causes sparks to jump from his/her hands onto the skin of the submissive. The closer the hands, the greater is the sensation. Because it is being conducted through the Dominant’s body it is self-limiting with respect to the force of the shock delivered. Not only that, it is real cool looking (a technical term!). Turn off the light and it looks like a magical Dominant giving a purple electrical massage to the submissive. Sparks dance over the submissive’s body. And the charge can be applied anywhere. And I mean anywhere. Touch nipple rings or labial piercings and the sparks fly! Not only is it a great sensation, it is a sensational show!

The Violet Wand can conduct electricity though other mediums. The Wand can add its magic to common items such as The Wartenberg Pinwheel. This small wheel — used by doctors to check for nerve damage — when hooked up to the Wand creates a spark pattern everywhere it is wheeled. It is dazzling to the eye and the sensations are intense. A relatively new addition to the Violet Wand accessory list is a stainless steel handled flogger with heavy metallicized mylar tails. Flogging has never been so…electric!

Although the Violet Wand uses miniscule amperage, it still is an electrical unit. And as such, one should avoid the heart area. And NEVER use the violet want – or a Tens Unit – on anyone with a pacemaker or an erratic heartbeat. And don’t forget to remove contact lenses and glasses so that the charge does not arc to them if you will be using the Violet Wand near the face.

One important thing we should note about the Violet Wand is that, like all technology, it has become less pricey over time. A decade ago, you were talking about a five hundred dollar investment. Nowadays, wands start out at about one hundred and fifty dollars or so.
