Someone should tell blindfold makers… “you only had one job!” And that is, to prevent the wearer from seeing anything. And yet, so many of the bondage blindfolds on the market fail at this simple task. Secondary objectives include comfort, preventing all light, and aesthetic appeal. Most blindfolds out there fail one or more of these. We found the few that are pretty good, and rated them below.

Tips for blindfolds:
- Blindfolds are a great start to sensory deprivation play. A good one will restrict all vision, but they are not nearly as intimidating as a hood.
- You can make an entire scene around just a blindfold and no other toys. Put it on your play partner, and then surprise them with sensation play or pain play. Or feed them different foods and make them guess what each one is. Having sight taken away heightens and amplifies the other senses, which can produce a powerful effect.
- When used with impact or other pain play, the wearer won’t known where it’s coming from next.
- You can also incorporate a blindfold into bondage, the really heighten the feeling of helplessness and add to the submissive headspace.
- Add a blindfold to your D/s play! Once blindfolded, normally simple tasks like slave positions can become much more challenging.
- If playing in a dungeon or other “public” space, a blindfold means that the wearer doesn’t know who or how many people are watching. This can be intensely erotic, particularly for exhibitionists or humiliation lovers.
- Wearing a blindfold can greatly amplify any anxiety a submissive may feel during a scene. Keep that in mind and check in regularly.
- Remember to take extra safety precautions when your play partner is blindfolded. They can’t see, so won’t be able avoid obstacles, and will find it harder to balance. Avoid leaving a person standing up blindfolded, unless you are right there steadying them the whole time.

Thank you for this guide. I can’t tell you how many blindfold I’ve tried only to have to toss them away. It’s nice to have a little more confidence buying now, even at a higher price point than I’ve invested in previously.

Just a note about anxiety and blindfolds. In some cases I would say the opposite is true. For me, being blindfolded calms me and lessens anxiety and I am more willing to stretch my inhibitions. Of course, trusting your Dom entirely is prerequisite.
This is why they created blinders for horses, and why ostriches stick their head in the sand. LOL
